(More customer reviews)I purchased a pair of Klipsch CDT5650 in-ceiling speakers. These mounting kits are required to stabilize the speakers against or in between the studs.
Speaker fits snugly in the hard plastic ring, secured by screws. A part of the bracket is flat where it's placed flat against a stud and screwed securely into place.
The white strips pictured are in fact rigid straps of thin perforated metal. One end is attached via a clasp to the plastic ring; the other end extends to the next stud where you put one or two screws to keep it tautly in place. So one end of the ring is screwed directly to a stud, the other end is stabilized to the next stud with the strip.
Graphically:
IO---I
If the studs are too far apart, attach a strip on either side of the ring so it stays in the center like so:
I--O--I
THIS SHOULD BE INCLUDED WITH THE SPEAKERS!!!!! You're ripping us off, Klipsch! They have the nerve of selling these for $30 a set. It costs what, $1.69 to make?? Ten bucks maybe I'd pay without discontent, but 30 is absurd.
I'm sure with some trial and error one can improvise a much cheaper solution but I needed them quick since the ceiling was going up in a new construction.
2 Stars for being greedy buggers.

The Klipsch IK-650-C2 installation kit offers increased mounting flexibility for Klipsch's square R-2650-C2 and R-5650-C2 in-ceiling speakers. This revolutionary kit design incorporates a mud ring, breakaway wire tie and color-coded brackets for easy speaker size identification. A flat side with a raised wall allows it to be mounted directly to a joist, making it much easier to align the speakers with other items in the ceiling. The kit also comes with perforated metal wings that easily fasten to the studs via screws, staples or nails. Ribbed for increased rigidity, these wings enable a kit to span up to 24 inches easily. Painted white for easy marking and placement, these metal wings will fold around the edge of the studs if necessary. *This kit is NOT plenum rated.
